Judith Hopkins Snyder April 3, 1942 - October 27, 2007 Judith Hopkins Snyder of El Cerrito, CA, age 65, died Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Alta Bates-Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, CA. Born Judith Kay Hopkins to Ronald F. and Levona Fay Hopkins on April 3, 1942 in Davenport, IA, "Judy" spent most of her formative years in Orinda, CA, where her family had relocated by 1948. Her wonderful memories of Orinda in its early days included day-long summer horseback adventures through the Orinda and Moraga countryside, experiences as a Brownie and Girl Scout and a long list of activities and projects that foretold the active, entertaining, outgoing and positive woman she was to become. Judy excelled at athletics, no matter the sport, and loved travel, nature and the great outdoors. She especially loved the game of tennis, though, where she not only excelled but competed and was ranked highly in Northern California 18 and under, competed as a member of UCSB's women's team, and taught professionally. She was a member of the Berkeley Tennis Club and of the USTA. She was a founding member of the Bear Valley, CA, Tennis Club. Judy was active in a variety of conservation programs, including the Sierra Club's oral history program, was very active in organizing foreign student exchange programs, worked as an organizer for the Bay Area Girl Scouts, taught English as a second language, and taught as a Head Start volunteer in Tennessee and Illinois. She was a member of the Mira Vista Country Club in El Cerrito, CA. Judy attended a year at UC Santa Barbara, 1960-61, but graduated from UC Berkeley in 1964 with a BA in history and English and later, in 1974, with a BS in conservation of natural resources. In March, 1968 Judy married Steve Snyder, her college beau, after his return from military service in Vietnam. Judy died in the 40th year of her marriage, a brilliant light in the lives of her husband, their four children and grandchildren and friends and neighbors. Judy was a long time, sincere and dedicated student of A Course In Miracles, the spiritual teaching which guided and nurtured her life's journey. Through A Course In Miracles, Judy's own relationship with Jesus deepened, bringing her peace and acceptance. Judy is survived by her husband, Stephen Snyder; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Zuehlsdorf and her husband, Danny, and their children, Summer (9) and Tanner (2); son, Jason Kayode Snyder and his wife, Nicki, and their daughters Jaden (5) and Jaeger (2); daughter, Anna Hopkins Snyder; son, Nathaniel Hopkins Snyder; Judy's "spare mom," Jan Hopkins, second wife of Judy's father; her brother, Gerald Allan Hopkins and his wife (Nancy) and her daughter (Sarah); and by Susan Wingfield, Gerry's first wife, their daughter, Gael Meraud and her daughter Charlotte (11). Judy's older brother, Ronald Kent Hopkins, died in 1988. A private family service will be held this week. A public memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Fremont or to the Christian Children's Fund. SUNSET VIEW MORTUARY (510) 525-5111
