In Memory

Rollin Mack - Class Of 1960

Rollin Mack

Steve Bradley sent the following information about Rollin,

Bill...

Rollin was feeling very weak, so went to the hospital in ~April last year (2020 - at the high of coronavirus). He was tested negative for the virus and admitted. Later testing showed he had Leukemia, of the least bad type, and started treatment. However a few days later he just died suddenly one night. We know very little else, as no one was allowed into the hospital due to the pandemic. He is survived by his daughter Sarah of CA. His wife (of 50 plus years) Margaret passed away several years ago, also of Leukemia.

He was living with a lady friend, LaRaine Baker, and they alternated between Tacoma WA and AZ seasonally. Rollin and I both belonged to a Motorcycle club, Black Mountain Motorcycle, of Cave Creek AZ, and rode frequently. The last lengthy ride we took, with others, in the summer of 2019 was to the Canadian Rockies Nat'l parks in Alberta. We had planned to ride to Carson City NV in 2020, and ride in the Sierras, which we had done several times before. Obviously, this didn't happen.

Rollin graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in Engineering, and was a plant manager for several RV manufacturing companies during his career, mostly located in CA, where he and Margaret did some serious sailboat racing in SF Bay.

I reconnected with Rollin (also Bob Hecocks) as a result of correspondence associated with the 60th reunion, as we had all moved on with college and careers after Miramonte, and lost contact. The 3 of us, and wives, met at our home (then in Scottsdale) and had a grand time reconnecting. It turned out that Rollin and Margaret had been wintering in AZ for years, and we never knew it. As you know Bob passed away a bit later, after the reunion.

Thanks for doing this, and I hope the above is useful. I remember your name (which is saying something given my ever shriveling brain), but I have basically no contact with Orinda, as I left for college, my parents moved to Sacramento, and I was only at Miramonte for one year as a Senior.

If there is anything else you might want to know, let me know, and I'll tell you if I know it.

Thanks again,

Steve

Thanking Steve for his comments on my dear friend Rollin and wishing his daughter and family my sincere condolences. Rollin and I grew up in Sleepy Hollow and were best friends. Our summer vacations were spent driving around Sleepy Hollow washing windows to earn money to do more important things. Rollin would pick me up on his scooter and I would sit behind him as we drove neighborhoods. He was always working on the scooter so it didn't surprise me that he was a life long biker. Rollin was a true gentleman and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

I am sorry to hear of your passing, Rollin.  I always felt you were a very nice, helpful person, with a good sense of humor and talent with The Trinidads.  I am sorry that we were not able to see you at our reunions, however.  Rest in peace.  Sue Tharp Guerra
