Stephen Edward Hicks, whose San Luis Obispo firm installed large heating and air conditioning systems for such well-known buildings as San Francisco's Moscone Center and Pacific Bell Park, died August 2 of cancer at the age of 59.
Born in Oakland on July 4, 1941, Mr. Hicks was the eldest son of San Francisco architect Edward Hicks and Mary Ellen Hicks.
Like his father, Edward Hicks, Mr. Hicks became an architect and attended California State Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo. He later went on to found Mechanical Detailing Inc. of San Luis Obispo and has played a role in works extending throughout the Bay Area, California and even Las Vegas.
Outside of work, Mr. Hicks, a resident of San Luis Obispo, was involved in numerous competitive activities. As a sailor, he was top finisher several straight years in the California Championship races for Prindle class boats, and a one time he was the record holder in Catamaran speed trials at Long Beach.
Mr. Hicks was also an avid fan of dancing competitions and motorcycle racing. He competed in international dance competitions in the United States, England and Canada.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife, Jayma Newland, of San Luis Obispo; his mother, Mary Ellen Hicks, who lives in Carmel; and a brother, Phillip Hicks, of San Anselmo.
A Celebration of Life memorial for family and friends of Stephen Hicks will be held at 7:30 p.m. on August 26 at Elks Lodge 222 in San Luis Obispo. Donations in Mr. Hicks' memory may be sent to Hospice of San Luis Obispo County, 1432 Higuera, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.
