While Doug and I weren’t close, we were certainly good friends in the Class of ‘59.  We had many of the same interests and motivations, and so we shared many classes and extracurricular activities. I admired and respected him greatly.  (And of course, he also had that great car, which as I recall was the only vehicle that could vanquish Tim Maloney’s Oldsmobile in the quarter-mile on the informal Moraga Way drag strip.  Sometimes I wonder how any of us survived adolescence.)

We also went off to college together.  But for some reason, at that point we lost touch.  Perhaps that’s inevitable, but who knows.  It’s something I've always regretted, and I had hoped that we might reconnect at one of the class reunions.  But he didn’t attend any that I did, and I was going to make a special effort to see if I could get him to come to the next, and probably last, one if we have one.  Sadly, that won’t be possible now, but he will be missed by those of us who knew and respected him even after all these many years.  He was a terrific person then, and from what I read in his obituary, he remained such.
